Progressive Writes SR-22 in Georgia After DUI

Your Georgia license was suspended after a DUI conviction. The court told you to file SR-22 proof of insurance with the Department of Driver Services for three years. You called Progressive because you've heard they write high-risk policies. They do—but the rate they quote you depends entirely on which Progressive entity underwrites your policy, and you won't know that until you get the quote.

Progressive operates multiple underwriting entities in Georgia. Standard-risk drivers with clean records get quoted through Progressive Auto Insurance Company (NAIC 24260, AM Best A+). Drivers with DUI convictions, suspended licenses, or other violations get routed to Progressive's non-standard tier or declined entirely. The SR-22 filing itself is a $25-50 one-time fee set by the carrier. The premium difference between standard and non-standard tier is what actually determines your total cost.

Progressive routes Georgia DUI drivers between standard and non-standard tiers—the tier assignment controls your premium more than the SR-22 filing itself.

Georgia SR-22 Filing Period After DUI

3 years

Georgia requires continuous SR-22 filing for three years from your DUI conviction date under O.C.G.A. § 40-5-57. If Progressive or any carrier cancels your policy during that period, DDS receives a cancellation notice and re-suspends your license automatically.

Standard vs Non-Standard Tier Assignment

Progressive does not publish tier assignment rules publicly. When you request a quote online or through an agent, Progressive's underwriting system evaluates your driving record, violation type, conviction date, and current license status. A first DUI conviction within the past three years typically triggers non-standard tier assignment. Multiple violations, a suspended license at the time of quote, or a DUI combined with an at-fault accident push you further into non-standard underwriting.

Non-standard tier means higher base rates before any SR-22 filing requirement enters the calculation. Progressive's non-standard entities—writing under the Progressive brand but with separate NAIC codes—charge premiums that reflect higher claims risk. The SR-22 filing itself does not raise your premium; it is the violation that caused the SR-22 requirement that determines your tier, and your tier determines your rate.

If Progressive declines to quote you at all, it means your violation profile falls outside their non-standard tier's appetite. This happens most often with multiple DUI convictions, DUI combined with a refusal to submit to a chemical test, or a DUI that resulted in bodily injury. When Progressive declines, you move to carriers that specialize exclusively in high-risk SR-22 business: Dairyland, Direct Auto, The General, Bristol West, GAINSCO, Acceptance, or Infinity.

Progressive's tier assignment happens during underwriting—you cannot request standard tier, and the SR-22 filing requirement does not control which tier you're placed in.

How Progressive Files SR-22 in Georgia

Progressive handles SR-22 filing electronically with Georgia DDS once your policy is active. The process takes one to three business days from policy effective date to DDS confirmation.

When you purchase a Progressive policy—either online, through an agent, or by phone—you tell Progressive at the point of sale that you need SR-22 filing. Progressive does not file the SR-22 retroactively. If you buy the policy and forget to request SR-22 filing, you must call Progressive's customer service line and request the filing separately. Progressive charges a one-time filing fee, typically $25-50 depending on state filing requirements, added to your first premium payment.

Progressive transmits the SR-22 certificate to Georgia DDS electronically. DDS updates your compliance status within one to three business days. You do not need to carry a paper SR-22 certificate in your vehicle—Georgia DDS maintains electronic records. Progressive mails you a copy of the filed SR-22 for your records. If Progressive cancels your policy for non-payment or if you cancel the policy yourself during the three-year SR-22 period, Progressive notifies DDS within 24 hours and DDS re-suspends your license immediately.

Georgia SR-22 Requirements After DUI

Georgia requires SR-22 filing for virtually all DUI-related suspensions under O.C.G.A. § 40-5-57. Your SR-22 period begins on your conviction date, not your license reinstatement date. If you were convicted on January 15, 2025, your three-year SR-22 period runs through January 14, 2028, regardless of when you actually reinstate your license.

Before you can reinstate your Georgia license after a DUI suspension, you must complete the DUI Alcohol or Drug Use Risk Reduction Program (a state-approved course administered by licensed providers), pay a $200 reinstatement fee to DDS, and file SR-22 proof of insurance. If you were arrested for DUI and refused a chemical test or failed a test with a BAC of 0.08 or higher, you also faced an Administrative License Suspension (ALS) under O.C.G.A. § 40-5-67.1. The ALS suspension runs concurrently with your court-ordered DUI suspension but has separate reinstatement steps.

Georgia's 2024 HB 205 reform created the Ignition Interlock Limited Driving Permit (IILDP) pathway for DUI arrestees. If you opted into the IILDP pathway immediately after your arrest, you installed an ignition interlock device and received limited driving privileges without waiting through the full hard suspension period. The IILDP requires SR-22 filing. If you did not elect the IILDP pathway, you served a 120-day hard suspension before becoming eligible for a standard Limited Driving Permit, which also requires SR-22 filing.

Georgia License Reinstatement Fee

$200

Georgia DDS charges a $200 base reinstatement fee for DUI-related suspensions. This fee applies to insurance-compliance reinstatements. If you were designated a Habitual Violator under O.C.G.A. § 40-5-58, the reinstatement fee is higher and requires an in-person DDS visit.

What Happens If Progressive Quotes You Higher Than Expected

Progressive's non-standard tier quotes often surprise drivers who expected their previous clean-record rate. A DUI conviction moves you out of standard underwriting. The premium Progressive quotes reflects the statistical claims risk of DUI drivers as a class, not your individual likelihood of filing a claim. Georgia is a tort state, meaning injured parties sue at-fault drivers directly. Carriers price DUI policies with the expectation that a portion of policyholders will cause accidents that result in bodily injury claims exceeding state minimum liability limits.

If Progressive's quote is unaffordable, request quotes from carriers that specialize in high-risk Georgia SR-22 business. Dairyland, Direct Auto, The General, Bristol West, and GAINSCO write non-standard SR-22 policies statewide. These carriers compete on price for DUI drivers and often quote lower premiums than Progressive's non-standard tier. Acceptance Insurance and Infinity also write Georgia SR-22 policies and accept first-DUI drivers Progressive declines.

Compare Carriers Writing Georgia DUI SR-22 Policies

Progressive is one option. Georgia has fourteen carriers actively writing SR-22 policies for DUI drivers as of current licensing records: Progressive, State Farm, GEICO, Dairyland, The General, Direct Auto, Bristol West, GAINSCO, Acceptance, Infinity, Kemper, National General, and USAA (for military-affiliated drivers). Each carrier underwrites DUI risk differently. Progressive may quote you in non-standard tier while State Farm declines you entirely. Dairyland may quote you $140/month while Progressive quotes $220/month for identical coverage limits.

Your next step: request quotes from at least three carriers writing Georgia SR-22 policies. Tell each carrier you need SR-22 filing for a DUI conviction, provide your conviction date, and confirm the quote includes Georgia's minimum liability limits of $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident / $25,000 property damage. Compare the total premium including the SR-22 filing fee. Bind the policy that meets Georgia's requirements at the lowest total cost, and confirm the carrier will file your SR-22 with DDS electronically within three business days of your policy effective date.
